Workshops

The Weekly Workshop series provides a rich set of professional development opportunities for all members, but especially for students and trainees. Students and trainees are often encouraged to present their research and expertise to showcase the important work being done. The flexible and casual setting of the workshop is designed to support all participants.

Workshops are on Fridays starting at 12:15 pm in 50 Willey Hall, Seminar room on the UMN West Bank. Food and beverages will be served at all upcoming workshops.

September 18 - PAA abstract workshop

Bring your abstracts for review and feedback as we prepare to submit for the 2027 PAA Annual meeting. 

September 25 - Minnesota Population Center and Life Course Center information session

Come learn all about the benefits of becoming a member of the Minnesota Population Center and Life Course Center from Rob Warren, Director of the Institute for Social Research and Innovation (ISRDI), Evan Roberts, ISRDI Training Director and Lindsey Fabian, Centers and Training Manager. There will also be food and trivia - please invite your friends to attend!

October 2 - Talking about your research to policymakers 

Join our expert panel including Associate Professor in the Division of Health Policy & Management Sayeh Nikpay, State Health Economist & Director of the Health Economics Program at the Minnesota Department of Health Stefan Gildermeister, and Minnesota State Senator Doron Clark for a discussion about how to effectively talk about your research with policy makers. Panel will be moderated by Evan Roberts.

October 9 - Negotiating an academic job offer 

You've been offered an academic job - now what? Get insights into negotiating an offer with Claire Kamp Dush

October 23 - Using AI for coding 

Mike Esposito and Eunhye Ahn discuss potential benefits and downfalls of using AI to assist with coding, with real examples from Claude

October 30 - What to do when there's not a good denominator 

Led by Katie Berry and Steven Ruggles, moderated by Evan Roberts

November 6 - Workplace culture and structure

What is it like to work in an academic department? What about a Population Center? How do things differ? Discuss this and more with a panel with experience across a variety of workplaces. 

November 13 - New advances in diff and diff 

Andrew Goodman-Bacon, Principal Research Economist, Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis 

November 20 - Paper hatchling

Have an idea for a research paper? Want to brainstorm some research directions? Sign up for a paper hatchling where we work in small groups to go over those early ideas. 

December 4 - Instrumental variable analysis

December 11 - Accessing and utilizing Minnesota vial records 

Join Cathy Fitch and Dave Van Riper for a general overview of what vital records are available in Minnesota, how to access them, and what research questions they might help you investigate.
