Biography

As a Muslim female South Asian American, the topic of inclusivity and belonging has long been a key interest of mine. At the core, my religious positionality as a practicing Muslim plays a significant role in my worldview and epistemology. I place a high-value on ‘ethnic maintenance’ and community building. My research interests in the past centered around the cultural identity of Muslims of South Asian heritage living in the United States. Now as an older student, my research interests have shifted to looking at the psychosocial needs of older adults, particularly within underrepresented communities, and the role higher education institutions as intergenerational communities can play in meeting those needs. On a very personal level, my ‘collectivist’ South Asian cultural lens positioned within a larger ‘individualist’ western frame has me constantly questioning society’s responsibility toward an ever growing aging population.
