Data-Intensive Research Conference 2023

August 2-3, 2023 | Minneapolis, MN & Online

The Network for Data-Intensive Research on Aging (NDIRA), a collaboration between IPUMS and the University of Minnesota Life Course Center, is proud to sponsor the 2023 Data-Intensive Research Conference.

2023 Conference Theme: How Place Shapes Health and Wellbeing through the Life Course

Throughout the life course, individuals are embedded in a variety of places and environments, including countries, states, cities, neighborhoods, schools, and workplaces, that shape health and wellbeing in myriad ways. Analyzing associations between place and wellbeing along with the pathways through which places impact health and wellbeing is increasingly important. The 2023 Data-Intensive Research Conference will showcase research that explores how place intersects with health and wellbeing in the U.S. and international settings. See the call for proposals.

Possible Research Topics

We welcome submissions that leverage large-scale population data to examine the role of place in shaping wellbeing throughout the life course in the U.S. and global contexts. Potential topics include (but are not limited to):

  • Spatial inequalities and disparate outcomes
  • Early life conditions and later life outcomes
  • Role of structural disparities in shaping wellbeing throughout the life course
  • Migration, caregiving, and social support
  • Country, state, and other place-based policy impacts on wellbeing
  • Urban and rural health and wellbeing
  • Neighborhood effects on health and wellbeing
  • Climate and health

Pre-Conference Workshop

A two-day, intensive workshop intended for NDIRA members (membership is free, join NDIRA now) interested in learning more about IPUMS data and leveraging it for aging and life course research will be held immediately before the conference (July 31-August 1). The workshop will provide a general overview of available data, highlight data resources related to the conference theme, and provide opportunities for working with the data.

Travel Support

We have funds to offer travel support for some conference presenters and some researchers selected to attend the workshop*. Recipients of travel support will receive reimbursement for some or all of the following expenses: domestic airfare, ground travel, lodging, and meals. You may indicate your interest in receiving travel support as part of the abstract submission or workshop application forms.

NDIRA seeks to build and support an interdisciplinary and diverse community of scientists leveraging powerful data resources in innovative ways to understand life course and health outcomes at older ages, as well as the demographics and economics of aging. Our goals are to build community, lower barriers to using complex data, and engage new users to increase diversity. To this end, funding will be awarded with consideration for NDIRA’s emphasis on increasing diversity in aging research with specific attention to supporting early career scholars, scholars from systemically excluded groups, and researchers outside of R1 institutions.

*Workshop participants are expected to also attend the research sessions on August 2-3.
